What is stainless steel?

All steels have the same basic iron and carbon composition, but stainless steel also contains a healthy dose of chromium—the alloy that gives stainless steel its famous corrosion resistance.

There are multiple grades called stainless steel, each with slightly different alloy composition, and therefore slightly different physical characteristics.

Stainless steel must contain at least 10.5 percent chromium. Depending on the grade, it may contain much higher chromium levels, and additional alloying ingredients like molybdenum, nickel, titanium, aluminum, copper, nitrogen, phosphorous or selenium.

304 Stainless Steel

Grade 304 stainless steel is generally regarded as the most common austenitic stainless steel. It contains high nickel content that is typically between 8 and 10.5 percent by weight and a high amount of chromium at approximately 18 to 20 percent by weight. Other major alloying elements include manganese, silicon, and carbon. The remainder of the chemical composition is primarily iron.

The high amounts of chromium and nickel give 304 stainless steel excellent corrosion resistance. Common applications of 304 stainless steel include:

Appliances such as refrigerators and dishwashers
Commercial food processing equipment
Fasteners
Piping
Heat exchangers
Structures in environments that would corrode standard carbon steel.

Common stainless steels

The two most common stainless steel grades are 304 and 904L. The key difference is the addition of molybdenum, an alloy which drastically enhances corrosion resistance, especially for more saline or chloride-exposed environments.

904L stainless steel contains molybdenum. 304 stainless steel does not.

For outdoor furnishings like rails and bollards, stainless steel is an ideal corrosion-resistant material, but it will only withstand long-term exposure if the grade is appropriate for its environment. 304 is an economical and practical choice for most environments, but it doesn’t have the chloride resistance of 304. The slightly higher price point of 304 is well worth it in areas with high chloride exposure, especially near the ocean or by heavily salted roadways. Each application for stainless steel has unique demands and needs a stainless steel that’s up to the task

What is 904L steel?

While 304L has long been the primary alloy ballast water filtration manufacturers use for their filter screens, it is not the only alloy available on the market. In fact, Philips Metal has been examining the value of 304L for many years now. As global leaders in the seawater filtration industry, our engineers sought to improve filtration standards by improving our materials. Our studies concluded that 304L stainless steel was not durable enough to meet our requirements – and so we opted instead to manufacture filter screens from 904L stainless steel In fact, Philips Metal – the global leader in seawater filtration – has been examining the value of 304L for many years now.

Like 304L, 904L stainless steel is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel. However, its chemical composition includes greater numbers of chromium (19-23%) and molybdenum (4-5%), which gives the alloy greater corrosion resistance than 304L. Some people are familiar with 904L stainless steel as a metal commonly used to produce Rolex watches, which speaks to its high quality and durability. However, the same benefits that make it a must-use for Rolex also make it hugely beneficial for seawater applications.

SS 904L stainless steels have excellent resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack. The high resistance of SUS 904L stainless steel against stress corrosion cracking is due to the presence of high amounts of nickel in its composition. Moreover, the addition of copper to these grades develops resistance to sulphuric acid and other reducing agents in both aggressive and mild conditions.

The corrosion resistance of 904L is intermediate between super austenitic grades, with 6% molybdenum content, and standard SUS316L austenitic grades. stainless steel grade 904L is less resistant to nitric acid than grades SUS304L and SUS310L, which are free of molybdenum. This steel grade needs to be solution treated following cold working, to achieve maximum stress corrosion cracking resistance under critical environments
